LG KC550

With all the 5 megapixel cameras on offer today it can be difficult to choose one to suit your needs. For those who require a decent camera, but don't want to fork out for unnecessary features, the LG KC550 could be the perfect choice. Touted as the cheapest 5 megapixel camera phone on the market, the KC550 is sure to worry its competitors. We take a closer look to find out if there's a catch to this great deal.

Physical Aspects

Despite its keen pricing, the design of the LG KC550 certainly hasn't been affected. It sports a simplistic, classy look, with lashings of chrome and fingerprint-loving glossy black plastic. It shares the same slider layout as LG's range-topping Secret, and the sliding action is just as smooth. Happily, the KC550 has rectified my main gripe with the Secret, and provides a 'proper' tactile 4-way d-pad and enter button. It seems that cost-cutting has its perks.

Either side of the d-pad you'll find the device's softkeys and call/end keys, as well as the dedicated cancel button. Oddly, the cancel button didn't function as expected. Rather than offering a quick way to delete things, it is instead used to go back one screen. However, when entering numbers or text, it resumes its expected role as a backspace button. The red 'end' key also doubles-up as the device's on/off button.

The front of the device is otherwise dominated by the 2.4" screen, with its bright 262,000 colors and 240 x 320 pixel QVGA resolution. The display appears to be the same as the LG Secret's, but without touch-sensitive capabilities. However, unlike the Secret, the KC550 doesn't have a mirrored finish over the display, making it much easier to view in bright environments. Just above the display is a discreet slit housing the earpiece. Overall the front of the device is very simplistic and stylish - very LG.

The rear of the phone is clad with grippy soft-touch plastic, so you don't have to worry about fingerprints here. There are also a few slits for the loudspeaker, next to the camera's brushed metal effect lens cover. The lens cover slides across with a satisfying click into place, but is fairly stiff, so you might find yourself opening the phone instead. Opening and closing the lens cover automatically activates and deactivates the camera.

The left side of the device is home to a single headphone/data/charger port, covered by a plastic door that slides across to keep grime out. The right side is a little busier, with a covered microSD slot, zoom/volume keys, and the camera shutter button. At the top corner of this side you'll also find a neat lanyard fixing. The microphone and button to unclip the back panel can be found on the bottom of the device.

Giving the fascia a push upwards will reveal the KC550's large 12-key keypad. It sports an attractive checkered design, with some keys being black, and others in a grey spun metal effect, similar to the d-pad's enter button. The keys are perfectly flat, but offer good feedback with a satisfying click.

The LG KU990 Viewty is a true powerhouse packing a mass of high-tech goodies under its hood: the impressive 3" touchscreen display with 240 x 400 pixels resolution, the HSDPA 3.6 Mbps capability, the stereo Bluetooth and the highly intriguing 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, which is also capable of capturing video at 120 fps. Feature-packed and exquisite, the LG KU990 looks set on the fast track to success and we were more than happy to get our hands on it.

The LG KU990 Viewty was only recently announced but it somehow fails to cause the same stir in the mobile community as the 5-megapixel Sony Ericsson K850 or the Samsung G600. Yet, as we managed to find out, it's a highly sophisticated device, that's quick to impress and certainly deserves attention.

The KU990 Viewty is not the first 5 megapixel cameraphone by LG. There are a number of reasons why their first attempt - the LG KG920 failed to gain noteworthy market share - the high price, the controversial swiveling design, and the slow camera interface, just to mention a few.

Back to our game

The LG KU990 Viewty measures 103.5 x 54.4 x 14.8 mm, which makes it about the size of iPhone, Sony Ericsson P1 or even HTC Touch. It weighs 112 g, which is not really much considering its performance characteristics. Designwise, it's almost certain that people would inevitably compare it to the Prada phone by LG. They share the same form factor, large screen and Flash UI, but are still totally different and this time Prada has no involvement in the project.

The front panel of the handset features only three hardware keys - the green and red Send/End keys and the correction C key, which is used as either backspace or for going one level up in the interface menu. In the top right corner, the secondary VGA camera for video calls can be found. The left side of the Viewty hosts the charger/headset/data cable universal port (much like the ones used by Samsung). It's ingeniously hidden under a sliding cover.

The bottom and top parts of the headset host no controls. The only point of interest at the bottom is the microphone pinhole, while the top offers the back cover release button and the stylish hand or neck strap eyelet.

The left side of the KU990 is far more interesting in terms of controls, since it incorporates the camera shutter key, the hardware keylock button, which is otherwise used to take pictures with image stabilization, and - finally a hardware slider key, that changes camera modes between still camera, video camera and image gallery.

The backside of the LG KU990 stunningly resembles the looks of a true digital camera. The 5 megapixel camera lens with Schneider-Kreuznach optics has a hardware jog wheel, that controls the digital zoom. It can also be used for setting the exposure compensation and brightness, as well as for zooming on pictures in the gallery, on office documents and web pages, as well as for controlling the volume. Around the camera lens, which has no protective cover of any sort, you will find the strobe flash, the focus assist light and the loudspeaker.

Removing the back panel reveals the 1000mAh Li-Ion battery. The SIM card slot and the microSD memory card slot are accessible only after you've removed it. As to battery life, there are no official figures but our test revealed that under heavy duty usage, the handset will last about 2-2.5 days with a single charge. The relatively good news is that DivX playback doesn't exert any extra strain on the battery. For example, the battery lasted enough to allow us to use the phone moderately for one full day and watch a 2-hour DivX movie later on in the evening, before it went completely flat.

The LG KU990 is really easy to handle and the touch-centric form factor is of no hindrance to usability. It feels nice and comfortable to hold. Speaking of touch though, it has got to be noted that the KU990 Viewty has a different touch-sensitive display than the LG Prada phone. While the Prada screen only accepted commands when touched with a bare finger or through a thin cloth, here you can use your fingers, the enclosed stylus, a pen, or even your doorkeys (certainly not advisable!). The display deals well under bright sunlight, though no display by whatever manufacturer has so far managed to beat Nokia in this respect.

The LG KU990 Viewty comes with an original stylus dongle, that doesn't plug anywhere into the handset. It is attached to the handstrap eyelet instead. It's quite innovative and looks great, but we're not convinced that it's that convenient after all, to have your stylus dangle alongside the handset in everyday use.

Black Berry Storm2 9520

The original Storm was BlackBerry’s first attempt at a touchscreen phone and while it wasn’t a complete disaster it didn’t quite conjure up a whirlwind of adulation either. We’ve known several Storm owners and none of them were overly complimentary about the handset’s long term performance. The main issues were down to the build quality (the side-mounted plastic buttons falling off), the bizarre decision by BlackBerry to not equip the handset with Wi-Fi and the lack of responsiveness from the SurePress screen.

The first of those two issues seem to be solved on the Storm2, but while the new SurePress screen used on this model has been greatly improved, we’re not sure it’s going to prove any more popular than the previous version.

Looks-wise the Storm2 is almost identical to the original, but there are some subtle differences here and there. For example, while the four buttons for answer, menu, back and end are still mounted on the front of the phone, they’re now integrated into the clickable part of the SurePress screen, rather than being separate to it. Also the chrome band that used to run around the outer edge of the phone has now being given a much darker finish so it blends in nicely with the glossy plastic finish that covers much of the rest of the handset (although thankfully the battery cover is still made of metal). Similarly BlackBerry has dumped the plasticky, side-mounted buttons and instead replaced them with rubberised ones that are better anchored into the chassis, which should make them much more durable in the long run.

Nevertheless, some niggles with the design remain. Despite having a 3.5mm headphone jack, we don’t like the way the jack is mounted on the side of the handset as it tends to snag when you’re taking the phone in and out of a pocket. Also, the phone feels quite thick and heavy, certainly much more so than the iPhone or Hero.

The handset runs the new BlackBerry OS v5.0, which includes a number of useful additions. One of the best of these is the updated cut and paste functionality. If you want to cut text, say from an email, and paste it into the web browser you now just have to call up the BlackBerry menu and choose Select. This places two selection tabs that you can position to mark the areas of text you want to cut. Although the system is similar to that used on the iPhone the selection tabs are much larger and more finger-friendly so they’re a good deal easier to position. There’s also updated Maps software and you can now access the clock and connections menu directly from the home screen.

RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700

It's been about a year since the original RIM BlackBerry Bold made its debut, and while it remains a very solid device, it's about time that a flashier, faster model took over the reigns. And that device would be the RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700. Not only is it T-Mobile's first 3G BlackBerry, but its sleeker design and performance enhancements make it a valuable addition to the carrier's lineup. The Bold also offers UMA support for Wi-Fi calls, a faster processor, and an updated OS. The only major downside of the smartphone, and one that plagues all BlackBerry devices, unfortunately, is the Web browser. It simply doesn't stand up to the competition in terms of ease of use or functionality. That said, if you're after a powerful messaging smartphone, the RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700 certainly has our vote of confidence. It offers more speed and features than T-Mobile's other BlackBerry offerings and gets the upper hand on the T-Mobile Dash 3G with its UMA support. As of press time, T-Mobile did not reveal a specific release date but said the Bold 9700 would be available in time for the holidays for $199.99 with a two-year contract.

Design

The RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700 looks nothing like its predecessor. Gone is the wide, masculine body, and in its place is a more svelte, compact smartphone that should fulfill RIM's hope of attracting both men and women, and consumers and professionals. At 4.29 inches tall by 2.36 inches wide by 0.56 inch thick and 4.3 ounces, the Bold 9700 is certainly more pocketable and is even smaller and lighter than the BlackBerry Tour. It feels solid in the hand and features a similar leatherette backing as the original Bold to give it a classy touch. In addition, the chrome edges and lines between the keyboard rows add to the handset's appeal.

Given the smaller size, you do lose a little bit in screen real estate. The Bold 9700 has a 2.44-inch display (compared with 2.75 inches) but its 480x360-pixel resolution at 245 pixels per inch certainly keeps things clear and sharp. It's the same as the Tour's, and while we did miss having the larger screen when viewing Web pages and videos, overall we had no complaints. Text was easy to read, and images looked crisp with vibrant colors.

The user interface is largely unchanged, though BlackBerry OS 5.0 brings some slight refinements. For example, the calendar has an easier to use system for creating new appointments with drop-down lists, and you can set your alarm clock using a spinning wheel. The home screen and main menu will be familiar to previous owners, though; you can customize the home screen with different themes and background images as well as six different shortcuts.

Below the display, you get the standard BlackBerry controls: Talk and End keys, a menu shortcut, and a back button. However, like the BlackBerry Curve 8520, the Bold 9700 replaces the traditional trackball navigator with an optical trackpad. The move from trackball to trackpad is surprisingly easy, and we were impressed by its responsiveness (you can also adjust its sensitivity to your liking through the Options menu). Scrolling through lists and navigating menus feels smoother using the trackpad and you can select an item simply by pressing down. RIM plans to use the trackpad in all its future devices, and that's fine by us. Like we mentioned earlier, the transition from one to the other felt easy and natural; plus, perhaps this will eliminate the issue that some users have had where the trackball stops working for whatever reason and needs to be replaced.

Like the Curve 8520, the Bold now features an optical trackpad instead of a trackball navigator.

Just below is the Bold 9700's 35-key full QWERTY keyboard. Though not as spacious as the original Bold's, the large and comfortable buttons are ideal for typing both short text messages and longer e-mails. The individual keys have raised ridges so they're easier to use compared to completely flat buttons, and they provide a nice springy feedback. If anything, they were just a touch stiff to press, but overall, we're very happy with the keyboard.

On the left spine, there's a 3.5mm headphone jack, a microUSB port/power connector, and a customizable shortcut key. You get a second convenience key on the right side, which is designated to the camera by default, and a volume rocker. The top holds a mute and lock buttons, and the camera and flash are located on back.

Our review unit from RIM included an AC adapter, a USB cable, a 2GB microSD card, a wired stereo headset, and a belt holster in the box. However, T-Mobile's final sales package may vary. For more add-ons, please check our cell phone accessories, ringtones, and help page.

The RIM BlackBerry Bold 9700 marks the first 3G (UMTS/HSDPA 900/1700/2100) BlackBerry for T-Mobile. Samsung has launched two new handsets-Corby TV and Metro TV in India. By doing this, Samsung becomes the first in India to provide live TV services on CDMA mobile phones. The phones come with an application called MImobiTV, which allows you to enjoy live and recorded videos on your handsets. At the TeleVision 2010 held in Netherlands, Samsung showcased one of their (as yet) unannounced phones, the Samsung S3370 smart phone. While there was a photo leak about a month ago for the Samsung S3370 cellphone, no details were then available and so we did not see fit to write up on it. Now however, Samsung has made available some of the tech specs of the Samsung S3370 and we have clearer photos of it too.

The Samsung S3370 mobile phone is set to have a 2.6″ TFT resistive touchscreen, a 1.3 MP camera, Bluetooth 2.1, USB 2.0, FM radio and 3G connectivity. Somewhat like the Samsung Reality, the Samsung S3370 cellphone is a full touchscreen phone and does not feature a physical keypad.

This means that the Samsung S3370 smart phone is really quite compact (99.9 x 53 x 12.9 mm) although perhaps a shade thicker than the iPhone and similar high end smart phones. The Samsung S3370 mobile phone weighs about 86g which is pretty light and should mean that it is comfortable to handle.

The Samsung S3370 cellphone has already been labeled as an entry-level touchscreen phone and truth be told that is pretty much what the Samsung S3370 smart phone looks like to us too.

Samsung I6500U Galaxy is a new phone powered by a fast 800MHz processor, and runs on the Android v2.1 OS. Competition is certainly one of the things that make the Android OS so much fun. There are already several manufacturers involved in the Google OS game and each of them has already released a flagship that aims at the peak of the food chain.

Samsung might be coming a tad late to the party but they are obviously entering with a bang. The I9000 Galaxy S packs a display of the greatest technology that the mobile world has ever seen and a pretty big one at that. A snappy 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU, HD video recording and a sweetly slim waistline make it look like the real deal in the eyes of every real geek.

Let’s take a look at the other features that the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S puts to the table.

As you can see the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S specs sheet is long enough to be considered high-end. What’s even better is that it manages to put something on top, namely the large 4” Super AMOLED display, which should become the new thing to beat if it has the performance of the Samsung S8500 Wave unit.

The TouchWiz-like Android customization still had some performance issues on the Galaxy Spica so we will have to see if those are fixed for the Galaxy S. We are also yet to check out how the new 1GHz Samsung Cortex A8 CPU compares to its Snapdragon peers in the Android environment, but we have a good feeling about it.

At any rate the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S is a fine piece of mobile technology and we are as eager as you to see if it will actually manage to top the charts or end up in the chasing pack. So let’s not waste any more time and head to the hardware part of the preview where we’ll examine the Galaxy S ergonomics.

BlackBerry-Curve-8900

Along with the Pearl, the Curve series represents the kinder, gentler side of BlackBerry; it's the side that appeals to consumers without sacrificing power, and from time to time, it's the side that's even been known to show some sex appeal. The Curve 8900 really takes that sex appeal to the next level, delivering one of the most drop-dead gorgeous phones ever to grace a corporate boardroom -- and it just so happens that T-Mobile USA's the first American carrier to deliver it, so we've taken the opportunity to put it through its paces. Does it out-Bold the Bold? Read on.

At the risk of gushing, we've got to say it again: in person, this is a really stunning phone, and we think it goes without saying that this is the best-looking device RIM has crafted to date. The Bold isn't far behind, but the 8900 gets nipped and tucked in just the right places and adds just enough matte chrome to take the prize (believe us, we hate shiny overkill as much as the next guy, but the chrome's legitimately tasteful here). It also swaps out the white trackball for a stealthy black one and replaces that polarizing pleather back with a far, far more agreeable slab of brushed aluminum. In a way, you can think of the industrial design as a Bold / Storm hybrid.

We figure a lot of buyers here are going to be upgrading from an 8320, so we wanted to put the father and the son side by side to see just what has changed. In a word? Everything. It's amazing to think that the 8300 was on the forefront of RIM's ID when it launched, because when you put it side-by-side with the 8900, it looks like a child's toy dominated by bulky, painted plastic. That alone could be enough to sway a few particularly fickle, superficial users into a new two-year contract (read: us), but what's more, you're getting a significantly higher resolution display -- just like the Bold -- along with a new default theme that really puts the tight dot pitch in the spotlight. On the downside, we noticed that the 8900's max brightness is noticeably lower than the 8320's, which could be an issue in direct sunlight; otherwise, you'll be fine.

Just as the Bold carries over the 8800's keyboard design, the 8900 carries over the 8300's -- keys are spaced with a gap between each, and unless you're a psychotic keyboard aficionado, we think you're really unlikely to experience a difference in accuracy, speed, or comfort between the two. The key layout is identical so there won't be any learning curve there, though the shift keys have shrunk from double-wides to single-wides; we didn't have any trouble quickly and accurately hitting them, so no big loss.

The user interface is a total walk in the park for anyone familiar with the BlackBerry ecosystem -- particularly an OS 4.6 device like the Bold -- and T-Mobile's made the expected customizations like myFaves access from the home screen. As we've said, the now-familiar wireframe theme is attractive and really shows off the power of the 8900's ultra-crisp 480 x 360 display, but when you look at the main menu, it can be a bit overwhelming; the icons have a tendency to blend into one another and it's a little difficult to quickly pick out what we're looking for by sight. We're sure we'd learn the locations of icons and commit them to memory after a couple weeks' of use -- either that or we'd change the theme -- but for new users, this could be a source of some intimidation out of the box.

BlackBerry Bold 9000

The new BlackBerry Bold 9000 is the successor to devices like the BlackBerry Curve and the 8800.

It is evolutionary, not revolutionary. But RIM's long years of experience really come through in the Bold, and it is far and away the best BlackBerry I've ever used.

Part of this is the elegance of the design, but a number of new features contribute as well, like the HVGA screen, HSDPA, and greatly improved software for working with Microsoft Office files.

DESIGN & BUILD

RIM has dramatically improved the looks of its devices in recent years, and the Bold is a new high point. Its rounded corners and leather-textured back make it somehow both professional and sexy.

And the higher-resolution screen is great, too. The Bold has a 320-by-480-pixel display, which is at least twice the resolution of the earlier RIM models, like the Curve. This is a beautiful screen that makes everything you do with the Bold look great, but especially watching movies.

This smartphone is wider than many of its competitors, but it's also relatively thin. And its width allows the aforementioned screen to be larger, and also makes room for a bigger keyboard. This isn't as wide as the landscape-oriented keyboards you'll find on some smartphones, but it's large enough to be comfortable to type on. There's no separation between keys, but each key has a raised area that makes it easier for you to be sure you're hitting just one at a time. Sadly, the Bold doesn't fix one of my biggest complaints with BlackBerry keyboards: there are no keys dedicated to the most frequently used punctuation marks, including the period and the comma.

Between the screen and keyboard is the trackball. As the Bold doesn't have a touchscreen, you'll do much of your interacting with it through this, and it's up to the job. After a couple of days of use, I began to think that a trackball is a better option than a D-pad and definitely superior to the old BlackBerry track-wheel.

There are programmable keys on both the left and right sides of this device, which is another thing I'd like to see on other smartphones.

There's also a button on top you can use to mute incoming calls. This doesn't answer the call or send it to voice-mail, it just quickly shuts off the ringing sound. You can use this same button to put the Bold in standby mode, which locks the keys and turns the screen off until you hit this button again. It will still take calls, so it's a good way to carry your smartphone around.

Sony Alpha a550 DSLR

Sony will induct a new camera in the open houses that is named as Sony Alpha a550 DSLR that bundles along 14.3MP sensor with dimensions such as 137 x 104 x 84mm (5.5 x 4.2 x 3.9in), and weight 599g (1.5lb). This Alpha series a550 will be accompanied by its younger sister a500 that supports a 12.3MP sensor.

In these latest series, some of finer functionalities have been added in order to prove these cameras - powerful and sought after gizmos. Thus a 550 series is something exclusively reserved for those, who think a gadget entirely look chic than a conventional compact camera.

Australians are buying more notebooks than desktops

With technology getting smaller and smaller, it's no doubt that desktop computers are being replaced by notebooks and laptops, with sales of the latter overtaking the former in Australia. The reasons for this are many, and with all the advantages of a portable computer it makes sense for the rest of us to follow suit.

While notebook PCs were once significantly more expensive than desktops, that's no longer the case. Though you can expect to pay a little bit more for a notebook with the same specs compared to desktops, you can still get a fairly high end laptop at a highly affordable price with very little difference. What you do get for the money however is practicality and portability.

Having a notebook allows you to work anywhere – outside in the sun (so long as you have a screen that can handle the glare), on the train, in the living room with the family or even on holiday. This means that you can increase productivity massively and waste far less time travelling when you could be travelling and getting things done. It also means you can increase multitasking however, and this way you'll be able to work while socialising or watching TV. As well as allowing you to work on the go however, a notebook PC will also help you work in other ways too. For example a laptop can be taken to meetings or lectures and used to make notes, or can be taken to a presentation and plugged into the projector in order to provide a PowerPoint presentation – things that you certainly couldn't do with a full sized PC.

A notebook doesn't just help you work though, and it can improve your leisure time as well. Taking a laptop on the train with you or on the plane means that you have a whole media entertainment centre sitting on your lap; like having an MP3 player, Xbox, e-book reader and portable DVD player with you all at once. You can also use a laptop to create playlists and DJ at parties and then plug it into some speakers in the room where everyone's mingling.

With a desktop PC, the tower itself is larger and heavier than a notebook, on top of that though there's also the keyboard and the monitor. Obviously this means the PC takes up far more space and if you have a small room it can be a big hassle. If you move about regularly it can also be cumbersome and tiring to set it back up each time, so notebooks make a great option for the Australian student (along with the aforementioned use in lectures and parties).

Nokia 7210 Supernova

However, apart from its literally dazzling looks this phone finds Nokia on familiar territory, with a candybar handset that is strong on messaging and phone features but for which 3G and Wi-Fi are in a different galaxy. While it might not be weighed down with features, the 7210 Supernova does provide an affordable phone solution: as it is available SIM free for around £89.99, so there's no upgrade hassles.

The 7210 is also not 'weighed down' in a very real sense, as it is truly compact and lightweight – a mere 10.6mm thin – and is the kind of handset that will slip into bags and pockets virtually unnoticed.

Clear, uncluttered design

The minimalist design approach involves a standard Nokia layout of selection keys based around a Navi pad but few other external controls, save for a mini-USB port, 2.5mm headphone jack and two-megapixel camera.

The keypad has more than a hint of the Motorola RAZR about it and while it looks great, it might take a little time to get used to how hard you have to press when you're messaging. Stick with it though as once you're there it's a slick, intuitive experience.

This phone uses the S40 operating system, so you get the benefit of a menu screen with large icons that is straightforward to navigate. Build quality is up to the usual durable Nokia standard, which is remarkable when you consider this phone weighs less than 70g.

Instant photo uploading

One of the 7210's strengths is its beautiful simplicity. This extends to one of Nokia's now-standard features, uploading photos to an online Flickr account. Once you've set up your online Flickr details, it's a simple case of snapping a picture and pressing a couple of keys, and your photo will then be online.

Admittedly the two-megapixel camera isn't the most creative tool and the lack of a flash is going to frustrate some users. On the positive side there are a range of resolution settings, with 1200x1600 at the top and 120x160 at the bottom, and a range of picture effects and white balance settings.

You can also capture video clips at a decent 10fps (frames per second) and with a choice of resolutions – though it has be said both are relatively low settings.

Sounds and storage

Other multimedia apps include a music player and FM radio with RDS (Radio Data System).

The music player is adaptable enough to play a range of formats: MP3, Midi, ACC, ACC+, eACC+ and WMA but without the power of 3G or better, it's unlikely you'll want to download full tracks to the phone over the air. It's advisable to manage your tunes on a PC – Nokia's PC suite software is included to help you do this – and then side-load them onto the phone.

You can create playlists of favourite songs once on the phone and a graphic equalizer feature ensures you can add enough booty-shakin' bass to your hip-hop and top up the raspy treble when it's time to rock. Storage options for all this multimedia tomfoolery are a 30MB internal memory and a microSD card slot that adds the capacity for up to 2GB more content.

Last day was my mom’s birthday & I was looking for a phone up to Rs.5000 to gift her. Actually she just use it for calls, Music & FM but when I was out for shopping I have lot of things in mind for a feature rich phones which just don’t have internet options like 3G.

I surfed a lot & went to local mobile store & I got hands on Nokia 2700 Classic & trust me, My mom was so happy to see this great new phone with unique reddish something colour with all the features I have in mind. Initially I thought that Xpress Music 5130 is a good alternative, but what extra it has a little bit more sound than this phone compared to Xpress music cost of Rs.5800 here in Maharashtra, I bought Nokia 2700 classic at just Rs. 4400.

So, I thought it was a great phone to discuss, may be after this review you also want to gift someone (fingers crossed) !!!

Finally, I was looking forward to buying this phone for at least one person! Sister lost her cell phone while she was in Chennai, and voila, a perfect chance to persuade somebody to buy this baby. The budget was small, but just enough to get this superb phone. And I have got to say, this has got to be the best decision I made [for somebody] on a mobile phone so far.

Preview

The Nokia 3110 Classic is a budget phone made for the masses. It features a 1.3 mega-pixel camera and expandable memory, while keeping the cost in mind.

Looks

Quite average considering that bulky is so not the fashion these days. Then again, you can’t expect sleek sexy looks from Nokia at this price range. The display does look rich though with some great themes from Nokia, so you won’t be entirely disappointed.

Performance

The keys are quite big, making it easy for typing. Or so it seems actually. Once you get down to the typing, you’ll realize that the keys are too hard, especially the 4, 5 and 6 keys. It might loosen up after constant use though, but don’t count on it. Call drops did occur rarely.

Camera & Music

The camera is 1.3 mega-pixels with no flash. The image quality is pretty average even in daylight. Shutter freaks, keep away please. But for a budget phone, 1.3 MP is really good!

For a small budget phone, it features the best loudspeaker that I have ever come across. The sound quality is very good and you will not be embarrassed playing it out to an audience. The earphones are pretty good too. The phone can play back mp3, AAC, and a few other formats besides having a visual-radio, making it a real treat.

However, if you want to make extensive use of either features, you will HAVE to pick up a memory card because the in-built 9 MB is hardly enough for anything. Else, you will have to settle with low bit-rate AAC music.

Price

Finally, this is where the phone thrashes competition (yes, it thrashes them and not just give them a beating). Priced at Rs.4,900/-, this is a real steal.

Final words

An excellent small budget phone. Feature packed. Just don’t forget to pick up a memory card if you want to make good use of the camera and music player.

Outside of CTIA Wireless, Nokia announced the new Nokia 5000 with a price point interesting for emerging markets. The Nokia 5000, which offers a 1.3 megapixel camera and a large QVGA display is costs under 90 Euro.

The Nokia 5000 is expected to begin shipping in the second quarter of 2008 with an estimated retail price of EUR 90, before subsidies and taxes.

The Nokia 5000 will set a new standard for functionalty and affordability. For mobile entrepreneurs as well as people on the move, the Nokia 5000 supports email and other essential benefits.

The 5000 is a Bluetooth capable handset with a 2″ 240×320 pixel display. I bought the phone because a second-hand phone I had bought two months ago was driving me nuts. The reception was terrible and half the time I couldn't hear who was calling me, so I decided a new phone was in my future. I chose Nokia because I've had three Nokia cell phones before, and have been very happy with all of them. This is the fourth Nokia phone I have now owned and I think Nokia definitely has me as a guaranteed repeat customer.

The Nokia 2600 Classic is slightly heavier than the high-end phones they also sell, but honestly I'm not a big fan of the very lightweight phones (they feel cheap), so the weight doesn't bother me at all. The Nokia 2600 Classic comes in black/blue, but then an extra cover is included in the box and this one is in a bright metallic orange color. The extra cover is wonderful as, if you scratch or otherwise damage the original black/blue case, you can just switch it out for the orange one and, voila, you have a brand new phone.

The phone has a 160 x 128 pixel color screen, so photos, games etc. look really nice on it. You can also personalize your phone with downloadable MP3 ring tones, take photos and video, listen to a very strong-signalled FM radio, and play several games.

One thing I love about this phone is the 'Applications' section of the menu. It comes with several games, but the great thing for me is the the 'Collection' section. Collection comes with several applications, including Converter, (where you can convert from Fahrenheit to Celsius), Currency (foreign currency exchange), Cooking (cooking measurements), Weight, Length, Breadth and more. This has been really useful for me as I live in a country (Thailand) where everything is in the metric system, which I'm still not completely used to.
